Paul’s Rant

Think about hand crafting an Innis & Gunn, Black Pilsner, Stout, or Belgian Wit to name a few.  With the use of our Barons Beer kits, our add-on packs and liquid yeast, you can create any of these great beers.  For any of you who were burned on a beer kit in the past, concluded that all beer kits were the same and gave up on home brewing, now is the time to give it another try.  You will be impressed, we guarantee it!

Quite often when we teach a class, we ask.  “Who has had lousy homemade beer?”  Almost every hand goes up.  This is usually attributed to the old fashioned can-type kits that leave a cidery homemade taste, or larger format boxes that sell for a big price, BUT leave a lot to be desired.

Hooray for American beer! I used to think that all they ever drank was the stereotypical light, lacking in character, ice cold straight from the tin variety.

In all my ignorance, I was panicking while getting ready for my short trip to Wisconsin last weekend. Indeed, I was looking forward to the cheese they are world famous for, but, I was afraid that I might be forced to pair it with something pretty much equal to carbonated water.

Been a busy week, plus had to take some time off! The best pic we could find to show how busy we were at our Airdrie Open House last Saturday is all the dirty glasses!  This is just one table - there were others! Well over 100 people attended our Open House - both our awesome customers as well as newbies. Great turnout / great wine and beer / lots of inquiries and orders for our fab Limited Edition lineup this year.

Our new Black Bavarian Pilsner is great!!  With our grain add on pack and Bavarian liquid yeast you will be absolutely amazed at this creation.  Check out our step by step process by clicking here.

Black Pilsner - Use Canadian Pilsner or Dutch Lager.  Our Black Pilsner is a dark lager that balances roasted yet smooth malt flavours with moderate hop bitterness.  Light to moderate malt flavour, which can have a clean, neutral character to a rich, sweet, Munich-like intensity.  Light to moderate roasted malt flaavours can give a bitter-chocolate palate that lasts into the finish, but which are never burnt.  Medium-low to medium bitterness, which can last into the finish.  Light to moderate noble hop flavour.  Add on package includes  60° L Caramel Malt, Chocolate Malt and Hallertau hops.  Use either Bavarian Lager, Czech Pilsner or Kolsch liquid yeast.

To help you make this great beer our Canadian Pilsner is on sale during November.

Light in colour - slightly more hop flavour than typical domestic lagers with a smooth finish.  This Pilsner is for those who want more flavour than found in a Canadian style beer.  The flavour is balanced between sweet and bitter with a hint of buttery flavor.  Comparable to a Czechoslovakian Pilsner.  Try using 2278 Czech Pils liquid yeast - a classic pilsner strain from the home of pilsners for a dry but malty finish.
