We have just found out The Home Vintner won The Readers' Choice Award being chosen as the best wine and beer making supply store in Calgary - to be announced in the Calgary Herald Wednesday, October 26 issue.  Awesome!  Thank you to all our wonderful customers who voted for us!  You're the Best!!

Corks!  Corks!  Corks!  If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - don't skimp on your corks!!!  We recently had a customer bring in a bottle of our Estate Stag's Leap Merlot.  He had purchased one of our best kits but when he corked it he bought poor quality corks at another store.  The entire 28 bottles had gone bad.  We guarantee all beer and wine kits 100% if you use our closures.

Indulge yourself and join us at The Home Vintner Airdrie as we spend an evening pairing various wines with cheese and chocolate.  Paul will walk you through the wine varietals, and then we will pair all wines with the appropriate cheese and chocolate.  Not all cheese and chocolate pair well with wine and this is where the knowledge begins.  Relax and enjoy yourselves as you sip a wine on its own, discuss its characteristics, and discover a whole new dimension with a correct cheese / chocolate pairing.

Thursday, October 27 at 7 PM at our Airdrie store.  This is always a fun and informative night out, with an opportunity to learn more about wine.  Everyone (18 and over) welcome - no "wine snobs" allowed.  This is an informal, fun evening.  For more info and to register, call 403-912-6323 or email  The cost is $15 per person with proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders for humanitarian efforts in Sudan.

Mein's Wine (Airdrie Echo Wednesday Sept 14, 2011 by Scott Mitchell, Editor) Twenty years ago, Joe Mein took on the task  of making wine himself.  After starting with winemaking kits in Ontario and British Columbia - to varying degrees of success - he settled in Airdrie 11 years ago and finally found a system he liked at The Home Vintner in North West Calgary.   He took some classes; made some kits; and now, more than 20 winemaking awards later...

Airdrie Wine Maker Nets National Award (Airdrie Echo Wednesday Sept 14, 2011 by Scott Mitchell, Editor) Kellie Babin was excited when she found out she won a Silver medal at the Amateur Winemakers of Canada Competition ( AWC).  Her friends were even more excited to drink the wine.  "I had a lot of fun sampling wine this summer with my neighbours at the lake," Babin laughed.  "I said, "Let's try some award winning wines now." They all loved it."

Now available - new product release - 4 Selection International kits made with Crushed Grape Skins.

Selection International with Grapeskins is one of the most exciting and timely kits Winexpert has produced, allowing the winemaker to choose a country of origin kit with excellent varietal character, bold flavours and aromas and full-bodied tannins, all in a wine that drinks well young and rewards patience.  You'll recognize these wines from previous Limited Edition releases.

Australian Petit Verdot - best described as a 'Super Cabernet', this is a dark, rich wine, with wonderfully concentrated flavours of juicy blackberry & blackcurrant, with smooth, gripping tannins and an elegant structure leading to a magnificent, boldly oaked finish.

Sicilian Nero D'Avola - is a deep garnet and shows ripe, berrylike fruit aromas lent complexity by hints of toast and smoke.  The palate features flavours of fresh blackberries, dark chocolate, and a little bit of anise.  There's sufficient acidity to give it structure, but the overall impression is soft as velvet.

Spanish Tempranillo - shows the black cherry, raspberry, plum and tobacco notes of the varietal, but the wine tends towards lushness and an overflowing of soft, ripe tannins, rather than bright fruit.  Vanilla and spice notes in the oak give way to a beguiling hint of dark coffee on the finish.

Chilean Malbec Shiraz displays a balance between ripeness & power, with intensely rich Shiraz grapes for a bold ruby purple colour, deep, dark plum and blackberry aromas showing subtle accents of chocolate.  Malbec brings plum, blackcurrant and violet aromas leading to a slight touch of leather notes.

The natural carbonation of our beer is done just before bottling by racking the beer back into the primary and then adding 220 grams of dextrose. Dissolving the dextrose in a little bit of hot water helps to evenly dissolve it throughout the 23 litres. Once bottled the yeast ferments the sugar thus producing additional alcohol and CO2 which is trapped in the bottle. This further fermentation in the bottle produces a new yeast bed in the bottle. To avoid stirring up this sediment always leave your beer bottles upright.  Do not drink from the bottle...If you have a surface scum on the beer, continue reading this article...

Australia's extreme heat & sunshine makes for intensely ripe grapes, and Shiraz and Mourvedre respond perfectly to it.  The small, thick skinned berries of Shiraz are deep blue-black in colour and high in extract and flavour.  Dense tannins, brisk acidity, and here to read more

New product now available in the Selection Original series - a refreshing, easy drinking red wine with aromas of ripe berries and floral notes.  On the palate, flavours of strawberries and cherries, revealing a slender texture, smooth tannins and a medium finish.

Years of experience are shared, so the novice wine maker can be successful on their first attempt. For those who have made wine for years, there are new methodologies which will improve your end result. Vintner's Reserve - continues to set the standard in it's category by yielding wines of excellent quality, flavour and aroma.

Vintner's Reserve World Vineyard - featuring popular grape varietals, with grape juices and concentrates from some of the finest growing regions in the world, this 10 litre kit produces high quality wines that you can enjoy within one month after bottling.

Vintner's Reserve Shiraz

Australia’s Shiraz boasts an incredible concentrated blend of lush, rich, ripe, jammy blackberry fruit, cola and spice followed by velvety, long, lingering tannins and fruit with chocolate, all within a firm structure that keeps it together beautifully.  A stunning, mouth-filling, dark and delicious treat.

This very dark ruby colored Shiraz is a pleasant everyday option that would go well with anything off the grill. It opens with a mild boysenberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, smooth, and very easy going. The flavor profile is a mild blackberry with a touch of gentle oak. The finish is dry and its mild chalky tannins are present but do not get in the way. That makes it a perfect quaffing wine to go with your barbequed meats.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

Vintner's Reserve Pinot Gris

A light, crisp white wine that is intended to be consumed early on.   Melon, pear and subtle tropical and citrus fruit, a honey, smoky flavor component as well. As for color, Pinot Gris is a pale, straw-like yellow with some golden hues thrown in. The texture of a Pinot Grigio is worth noting, as it has very smooth, almost silk-like overtones that leave an impression on the palate.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

World Vineyard Chilean Malbec

The hot dry climate allows the grapes to reach excellent ripeness, and lush fruity characters, making an intense, black wine. A thick-skinned grape full of color, tannin and flavor, Malbec makes wines of great power and character, with blackberry, plums, tar, red pepper, sweet cherry, spice, licorice and deep bittersweet notes, almost like unsweetened chocolate or espresso.  (Photo of Paul & daughter tasting wine in Chile)

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

World Vineyard California Trinity White

A unique blend of Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, combining lemon and grapefruit aromas with rounded fruit, redolent of melons and fresh figs to complete this crisp refreshing medium-bodied white.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

Dutch Lager

This globally popular beer reflects the styles of Grolsch and Heineken, with a crisp golden lager character and smooth spicy hoppiness, rounding out to a gentle, grassy finish. Crisp, distinct and delicious.

Try Wyeast 2565 Kolsch yeast with all our Lager styles or Wyeast 3822 Dutch Castle yeast.

During October purchase 2 Barons beer kits on the same day and receive $5 off any grain or liquid yeast add on.  May not be combined with any other offer.

Les calls this beer, "Thanksgiving in a glass!"  Our pumpkin beer is mild, with no bitterness, with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves.  Pumpkin Cerveza will add seasonal cheer to your beer collection.  We use the Barons Mexican Cerveza which allows the pumpkin pie flavours to come through beautifully.  Soon fresh pumpkins will be in the stores, you'll need a 6-7 lb pumpkin, recipes are in our stores.
