The Home Vintner held its 16th Annual Limited Edition Tasting Evening on Nov. 18th.  Although it was a bitter cold night, many braved the elements to attend.  As usual,  Dave Larocque gave a great presentation on this year's Limited Edition wines along with food pairings for each wine.   All pairings had the "WOW" factor which dramatically accentuated the character of the wine. more

Ask The Vintner - "Really enjoyed the Limited Edition Wine Tasting, would it be possible to get some of the food pairing recipes?

Yes, here they are - this recipe for the spicy meatballs that was paired with the Italian Primitivo, was created by Chef Nash of Fine Balance Catering, Airdrie.  It was the right balance of fennel seed that did the trick! more

We have been back ordered for our high quality primaries for 3 weeks.  In the mean time we supplied our customers with the standard primaries available from other suppliers.  Our new stock has now arrived so please return the primaries purchased in November and we will replace them with these better primaries.

Beer likes to ferment warmer than wine.  At 23 C / 73 F the beer will be ready to rack out of the primary usually on the 3rd day.  At 20 C / 68 F it will take almost a week before the specific gravity (CG) is low enough.  At cooler temperatures it can take up to 6 or 7 weeks for the SG to reach its lowest level.  At cooler temperatures the yeast can stall at 3 weeks and then kick in again at 4 weeks.  When people call saying that the SG won't drop we suspect right away that the wine or beer isn't warm enough.  The answer is an electric heat belt which goes on the primary and then on an Italian carboy (if you have a Mexican or North American carboy do not use the heat belt on them).  The heat belt maintains the temperature at exactly 23 C.  Heat belts can warm your wine and when you are finishing the wine it helps get rid of CO2.  Heat belts are sold in all our stores for $27.95.

Vintner's Reserve - continues to set the standard in it's category by yielding wines of excellent quality, flavour and aroma.

Vintner's Reserve World Vineyard - featuring popular grape varietals, with grape juices and concentrates from some of the finest growing regions in the world, this 10 litre kit produces high quality wines that you can enjoy within one month after bottling.

Vintners Reserve Bergamais  $73.95
This supple, fruity and delicate red nouveau style' wine is typically consumed young and is at its best when served slightly chilled.  To be enjoyed on any occasion.  Bergamais is such a fun wine.  Yes, usually red wines are very serious but this light-bodied wine is red with a fun and playful attitude.

It's color is a bit lighter red than most and has a much lighter taste. Think of it as a "juicy" wine.  When drinking it, you'll feel like you just bit into a fresh juicy red berry.  This terrific tasting light-bodied, off-dry red has no oak added. This combination makes for a delicious, easy drinking wine with all the great health benefits from red wines.  How can you go wrong!

I love to serve this wine with heavier dishes because its lighter body gives your heavy dishes good balance.  Try it with lasagna, beef wellington, lamb and veal.  Its great with softer cheeses such as brie or smoked provolone.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Light-Medium | Oak Intensity: None

Vintners Reserve Viognier  $72.95
Viognier is the comeback king of white grapes.  It was grown for centuries in France, but its popularity declined in the 20th century.  It was revived by a surge of interest in the wine varieties of the southern Rhone region of France.  Planted in California the grape flourishes, making wonderful wines with aromas of apricots, peaches, jasmine, even orange blossom and mint.

A discerning feature of this grape is its low acidity: this is the secret of its luscious, easygoing charms.  The intense fruitiness of this delicately green-gold wine suggests rich sweetness with its apple and pear flavors, but it shows a surprisingly dry and aromatic finish.  Apricot, peach and spice aromas burst out of the glass. While the crisp apple-pear flavors make it wonderful savored on its own, Viognier also goes well with spicy Thai cuisine, Chinese and Mexican dishes, and medium to strong and salty cheeses.

The intense fruitiness of this beguiling wine suggests rich sweetness, but it shows a surprisingly dry and aromatic finish.  A delicate yellow colour, tinged with the variety's typical 'green-gold' hue, it bursts out of the glass with apricot, peach and spice aromas.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

World Vineyard California Pinot Noir  $84.95

Scents of raspberries and spice rise from the glass, introducing intense, rounded, blackberry, and black currant fruit. Hints of vanilla and sweet cherry enhance the rich flavors.  The finish is long, with notes berry and a bit of chocolate.  Wonderful balance and silky tannins complete the wine.

World Vineyard California Pinot Noir creates a lasting impression on the palate with an intense ripe-grape and black cherry aroma, accented by a spicy suggestion of cinnamon and mint.  Medium-full bodied and rich but not heavy, it's perfectly balanced with alcohol acid and tannin working harmoniously, and has substantial flavour despite its delicacy.  It has an appealing soft, velvety texture, like liquid silk gently caressing the palate.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

World Vineyard Washington Riesling  $77.95

This wine has "WoW" factor!  When I first made this, I could not believe how great it tasted and how affordable it is!  Now instead of my family saying "you're bringing wine aren't you? " It's more like "you're bringing some of that awesome Riesling, aren't you?"!

Riesling grapes are fairly easy to grow and do well in many climates.  However, there is something special that happens in the state of Washington.  The warm sunny days and cool nights create an off-dry, inviting and refreshing Riesling. This Riesling delivers classic Riesling characters of juicy peach, ripe pear, melon, with subtle mineral notes.  This can be considered an everyday Riesling that is versatile and easy to drink yet elegant enough to serve with shrimp and lobster.

World Vineyard Washington Riesling has a distinctive floral and green apple aroma mixed with mineral elements from its Washington vineyard, giving it a brisk, 'racy' quality.  Its high natural level of acidity enables it to balance a hint of residual sugar, setting off aromas of rose petal, apple, pear, peach and apricot and leading to a grand crisp finish of flinty mineral notes. Riesling is the longest-lived of all white wines.
Sweetness: Off-Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

Baron's Brown Ale - $35.95

Deep chestnut coloured ale with a full-bodied, roasted malt flavour.  Precisely balanced with hop flavour, aroma, and maltiness to bring out this beer's true character!

This brown ale is more full bodied and flavorful than lagers in general, thereby providing a nice autumn or winter drink as well as many food pairing possibilities.  With its smooth mouth feel, lightly roasted sweet malt taste, and subtle nutty butteryness Baron's Brown Ale makes for a very pleasant drink similar to our English neighbors Newcastle.

Add 2 cups honey to carboy and make a Honey Brown or purchase our Stout additive pack and produce our Award winning Stout!  How about a Raspberry Brown Ale, recipes in our stores.
