Cucumber Melon Sauvignon Blanc – Tasting Notes

One of the most frequent questions we are asked when a new product arrives is “what does it taste like”?

We wonder the same thing! We have an idea what it should taste like, based on information from WinExpert and experience, but find ourselves in the same boat as customers with new product. What does it REALLY taste like? Let’s explore that a little further with the recent release of Island Mist Cucumber Melon Sauvignon Blanc.

Product description reads: The aroma is fresh and fragrant like your favourite Sauvignon Blanc. Light and fruity, the sweet notes of the melon are the perfect complement to the clean crisp cucumber. Body 1 – Sweetness 6.

Five staff had the opportunity to evaluate this wine recently, with one an avid cucumber hater. We were all surprised and intrigued by the experience of it. Yes – similar to the description, but not at all the same as experiencing it. Collectively we found the nose very aromatic and pleasing. Melon presents with sweet fruit up front (not citrus, not tropical, definitely melon). You can detect the cucumber, which pairs exceptionally well with the Sauvignon Blanc wine base of this kit – drawing it out and allowing it’s aromatics to shine through.

Tasting: There is a pleasant sweet melon fruit in the initial taste. Again – the cucumber brings out the best in the Sauvignon Blanc by tempering the sweetness of the melon, and almost lending a faux or perceived crispness to highlight the crisp and acidic characteristics of a Sauvignon Blanc. The finish is where we were all intrigued. That was where the cucumber lingered on the tongue, bringing with it a mouthwatering finish that felt like a refreshing thirst quench on a hot day. Even our cucumber hater loved it!

In short: highly aromatic, sweet but not over sweet, fruity and tasty while still allowing the wine to shine through, with a long and mouthwatering finish. This will be fantastic on the deck this summer, slightly chilled or with a little ice in the glass!

WinExpert has created a Simple Summer Salad recipe to pair with this wine. What is your favorite pairing with this wine? Let us know!
