PAUL'S RANT

SWIRL, SNIFF, SIP!!

While you are entertaining relatives and guests over Christmas, take time to show them how to appreciate your wine.  You are making the best wine kits on the market – ALL your wines have life to them.

If you're just “swilling” back the wine with no thought to its quality, you're missing out on the enjoyment of wine.

The quality difference with Winexpert kits is very dramatic, so while you're entertaining, teach your guests how to swirl, releasing the aromatics, sniff to appreciate the nose, and sip to enjoy the mouth feel and variety of flavours and characteristics these wines produce.

Life's too short to tolerate second rate wine kits!

BEER GLASS SHAPE ALTERS PEOPLE'S DRINKING SPEED

The shape of your glass is probably the last thing on your mind when you are down at the pub. However, researchers at the University of Bristol believe the shape of beer glasses affects the speed at which people drink.

Their study, published in the journal PloS ONE, suggests people drink more quickly out of curved glasses than straight ones. They argue that the curvy glassware makes pacing yourself a much greater challenge.

The report said: “Drinking time is slowed by almost 60% when an alcoholic beverage is presented in a straight glass compared with a curved glass.”  The researchers thought that curvy glasses made it harder to pace drinking because judging how much was in the glass became more difficult owing to its curved shape.

The lead researcher Dr. Angela Attwood says: "Altering the glasses used in pubs could “nudge” people to drink more healthily by “giving control back”.

Morale of the story: A good beer is meant to be enjoyed, not “guzzled”!

WAYNE'S HI-TEST SCOTCH IPA

Wayne has crafted a wonderful Innes & Gunn style IPA with the addition of 12 year old Famous Grouse scotch.  At our tasting yesterday we were amazed at the balance of the malt and scotch!  Wayne used the Barons Canadian Hi-Test as the background so this strong beer is smooth and flavourful, robust and bold.  For the brave at heart, not the weak-kneed.  Wayne's recipe is now available in our stores.

HOME MADE ROOT BEER

I have just made my Christmas batch of non-alcoholic root beer.  We have root beer extract available in our stores.  Use your primary, add the root beer extract along with 2 KG of sugar and beer yeast.  Bottle right away into beer bottles, in about a week when the bottle is firm move into a cool area to stabalize carbonation.  (We recommend using our PET 500 ml or 1 L bottles as the carbonation can be quite veriateable).

WINE RECOMMENDATION - ECLIPSE LODI OLD VINES ZINFANDEL

Our special Zinfandel is sourced directly from the Lodi appellation in California’s Central Valley (home to Mondavi’s Lodi-Woodbridge winery which was my wine recommendation in November - our Lodi Ranch 11 click here to read more...).

The famous thick, gnarled and twisted old vine plantings (some dating back to the 1880’s) possess deep, rigorous root systems and limited grape yields, contributing to intensely concentrated flavours in the grapes.  Ideally situated between the Sierra Foothills and the San Francisco Bay Delta, Lodi benefits from cool afternoon and evening breezes, producing world-renowned Zinfandel.

The result is a deep rich red, with bold, zesty aromas and ripe berry fruits on the tongue.  “Jam on toast” is Paul’s best description, black fruit flavours of cherries, raspberries, and blackberries.  Definitely on the top of my favourites!

SPECIAL OFFERS IN DECEMBER

Vintners Reserve - continues to set the standard in its category by yielding wines of excellent quality, flavour and aroma.

World Vineyard - featuring popular grape varietals, with grape juices and concentrates from some of the finest growing regions in the world, this 10 litre kit produces high quality wines that you can enjoy within one month after bottling.

New Vintners Reserve Bergamais - $5 Off

This supple, fruity and delicate red nouveau style wine is typically consumed young and is at its best when served slightly chilled. A complex nose of black cherry and blackberry, medium bodied as Gamay goes, with bright, juicy red cherry fruit, light but silky tannins and soft barrel textures on the front and mid-palate and a finish packed with steeped cherry and plum flavours. To be enjoyed on any occasion. Bergamais is such a fun wine. Yes, usually red wines are very serious but this light-bodied wine is red with a fun and playful attitude.

Its colour is a bit lighter red than most and has a much lighter taste. Think of it as a "juicy" wine. When drinking it, you'll feel like you just bit into a fresh juicy red berry. This terrific tasting light-bodied, off-dry red has no oak added. This combination makes for a delicious, easy drinking wine with all the great health benefits from red wines. How can you go wrong! I love to serve this wine with heavier dishes because its lighter body gives your heavy dishes good balance. Try it with lasagna, beef wellington, lamb and veal. It's great with softer cheeses such as brie or smoked provolone.

New Vintners Reserve Viognier - $5 Off

The intense fruitiness of this beguiling wine suggests rich sweetness, but it shows a surprisingly dry and aromatic finish. A delicate yellow colour, tinged with the variety's typical 'green-gold' hue, it bursts out of the glass with apricot, peach and spice aromas.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Light-Medium | Oak Intensity: NONE

New World Vineyard French Cabernet Sauvignon - $5 Off

All the classic associations with this well-known grape variety used in France's brilliant red wine blends are here in this Cabernet brought in directly from France: rich, intense aromas, deep berry fruits, healthy tannins, and a smooth, lingering finish. With the proper tannin astringency and premium French oak evident throughout, this is an elegant wine offering body and complexity when aged.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Medium

New World Vineyard Washington Riesling - $5 Off

World Vineyard Washington Riesling has a distinctive floral and green apple aroma mixed with mineral elements from its Washington vineyard, giving it a brisk, 'racy' quality. Its high natural level of acidity enables it to balance a hint of residual sugar, setting off aromas of rose petal, apple, pear, peach and apricot and leading to a grand crisp finish of flinty mineral notes. Riesling is the longest-lived of all white wines.

Sweetness: Off-Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

BEER ON SALE IN DECEMBER

Barons Amber Ale - $4 OFF

Malty rich flavour and body. This reddish ale has slightly more bitterness than typical ales but its maltiness gives a nice balance between sweet and bitter. Our unique blend of 2-row pilsen, crystal and chocolate malts gives this ale its incredible character. Comparable to a Sleeman's Amber Ale.

Our HV Tartan Ale recipe starts with a Barons Amber Ale. Try Wyeast 1728 Scottish Ale yeast. We were pleasantly surprised with this Scottish style ale with warm amber hues and complex aromas, giving it a full-bodied taste with a slightly smoky finish.

Click here to read our blog on Alexander Keith's Limited Release Tartan Ale.

Our new Winter Spice Amber Ale recipe is now available. Nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, orange peel and coriander...mmmm! Just need to find a fireplace.
