WineMaker Magazine Int. Amateur Wine Competition is the largest amateur winemaking competition in North America.  Wine kits compete side-by-side in a blind judging across all categories with wines made from grapes and/or juices.  At the April 2011 competition wines made with Winexpert's premium quality brands were awarded 220 medals bringing our total to 1766 medals in the 9 annual competitions held so far.

We have received extra 2011 Limited Editions - $10 off in June!  Available while supplies last.

Today I had the pleasure of stabilizing one of the Selection Limited Editions from this season, the German Traminer Spatlese. For those of you that attended the Limited Edition event in November you may remember that the equivalent wine offered for tasting was a sweet take on a Gewurztraminer. Once the FPack was added to this wine at stabilization today, the aroma and flavors were a little sweet, fruity and fantastic! Last year the Pacifica was so fantastic that it sold out almost as fast as... (Kelly works at our Airdrie store)

When I was a little kid I would often go beachcombing along the shorelines of the Gulf Islands. I had always hoped to find a bottle with a note in it from someone in a far off land across the Pacific. I came across a lot of glass, but never did find a message in a bottle. Decades later, I still love glass bottles. With plastic becoming a more and more common packaging medium, I much prefer the feeling and weight of glass. And, for me, there's still an aspect of romance in a glass wine bottle. But...   (Terry works at our NW store)

Save your Island Mist boxes so that you can transform them into an easy pour wine box.  Purchase a few of our wine bags with spouts which can be placed inside your empty box - just cut a hole for the spout.  Easily transported to your summer events, take to the cottage, use in your back yard.  Warning: consumption will increase!  (Plastic wine bags are good for short term use - not for long term storage.)

I found a really good Lebanese Pilsner in Damascus last night, sitting on the balcony overlooking the city.  This is the ideal beer for a week that is going to be 32C all week. This beer is very much in the style of the Czech Pilsner, and slightly hoppier than our Canadian Pilsner.  Although Syria does produce their own wine and beer, there seems to be a much better value with the Lebanese import. My daughters and I will continue with our quest to find some better, locally produced brew.

I highly recommend our new Angel Blanco in the Vintner's Reserve series.  An amazing value at $82.95 producing 23 litres of wine!!  An easy drinking, well-rounded white wine, with appealing fruit flavours and aromas.  Rich and boldly fruity from a blend of Chardonnay, Muscat and Riesling that delivers up a floral aromatic nose and a fine mix of peachy, honey, pineapple fruit finishing with a perfect balance of acidity and fruitiness.  (Ron manages our NW store)

From the comments that our new wine and beer makers made the other night at our class I came to a new realization - other wine making stores sell product with little education.  Some guests had made wine for many years, I was amazed at what they didn't know!  Simple things like using a wine thief to check the specific gravity, the use of an auto syphon, using only 5 grade plastic for fermenting, the proper removal of CO2 after stabilizing, some had never seen a bottling wand, no understanding of special steps required because of our altitude.  Check out our event calendar and bring a friend to one of our classes.  During June the first person pays $25, the second is free.  Split the deal and come and enjoy!

Vintner's Reserve Riesling - Bronze Award Winner - $5 Off

The pride of German winemaking, this popular varietal is a highly aromatic with apple, peach and pear at the forefront mixed with delicate floral undertones with honey and spice on the nose.  On the palate, our Riesling echoes the apple, pear and peach along with citrus and tropical nuances.  This Riesling picks up a noticeable "minerality" from its native soils, explaining why hints of slate or limestone can be exhibited.

Canadian Pilsner - $4 OFF

Light in colour - slightly more hop flavour than typical domestic lagers with a smooth finish.  This Pilsner is for those who want more flavour than found in a Canadian style beer.  The flavour is balanced between sweet and bitter with a hint of buttery flavor.  Comparable to a Czechoslovakian Pilsner.  Try using 2278 Czech Pils liquid yeast - a classic pilsner strain from the home of pilsners for a dry but malty finish.
