Subtle flavours and balance of wine really come alive when paired with its food counterpart.  Interested in discovering this for yourself? You’re in luck! We are hosting two wine & food pairing evenings November 18 and November 26 where you can experience what a difference the right dish can make. Special presenter from Winexpert is Rick Vanderberg.

We will be showcasing commercial examples of our upcoming special edition wines by pairing them with specially selected food items for you to enjoy.

As a customer, I discovered the Limited Edition Series (LE) in the fall of 2005. I ordered at least one each of the five kits offered.  After that, I always ordered everything offered.  One year, I ordered 8 of one kit once I discovered how expensive the commercial equivalent was we sampled at the wine tasting.

If you are new to this product, I would suggest that you attend one of the two tastings offered in November. The commercial equivalent will be served along with food pairings. A very enjoyable event.

Each year the LE is the best value for the buck as we offer you a volume discount when you pre-order the LE15. I have always enjoyed the videos available on each kit, the extra knowledge makes the enjoyment of the finished product greater. Now that I'm on staff I see that I am not the only one who takes advantage of this special yearly offering.

The Home Vintner is always on the hunt for emerging trends in craft beer. Beer Fest sampling and a tasting night at a craft beer pub in Vancouver inspired us to add White IPA to our recipe lineup.

This beer is a hybrid style that is sometimes called a Belgian IPA. It typically uses a Belgian style yeast, plus malts and hops usually found in a North American IPA. The result is a fusion of Belgian Wit and American IPA - all the spice, malt, fruit and hoppy appeal to blend both styles of beer.

If you have not tried one of these yet, there are many commercial craft beer examples available at your local craft beer supplier.

We expect our White IPA add-pack to create a delightful mix of the best of a Belgian Wit (orange peel and coriander) - with more malt, a hit of citrus style hops and an appropriate bittering bite of an American IPA. This beer should deliver incredible nose with lemon, lime, grapefruit and a hint of tropical melon.

Craft and enjoy your own White IPA using: The November Sale Beer: Baron's Pale Ale + White IPA add-pack + Wyeast Belgian Wit yeast.

This week the new NDP government introduced a new SIN tax - they have added another 5% liquor tax on top of the PC's 10% increase from last spring. This amounts to an additional 2 cents on a bottle of beer & 18 cents on a 750 ml bottle of wine.

When you purchase a 750 ml bottle of wine from a liquor store in Alberta, you still pay two taxes:

• Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission (AGLC) mark-up rate for 750 ml wine under 16% alcohol is $2.75 + $.18 = $2.93

• Then you pay tax on a tax! GST on the entire purchase including GST on the AGLC tax is another $.15 = $3.08 a bottle.

• The AGLC standard mark-up rate for beer is $1.26 per litre plus GST. Now it will be about $1.32 per litre.

Total tax on beer including GST for 23 litres is $1.40 x 23 = $32.20.

No tax is payable on homemade wine and beer kits. Do the math $2.93 ALGC plus GST a bottle = $3.08, our wine kits produce 28 to 30 bottles, so the tax you don’t pay is $86.14. Many of our wine kits cost less than the tax you don’t pay.

In our current financial climate now is the best time to save money by making your own tax free wine and beer at home.

• World Vineyard Italian Sangiovese - $5 off

The lively fruit and good acidity make it one of the most food-friendly of all reds, pairing well with pasta, veal Parmigiana, intensely flavoured cheeses, and fruits like cherries, figs, plums and raspberries.

• World Vineyard French Sauvignon Blanc - $5 off

Steely, grassy, herbaceous - the classic traits of Sauvignon Blanc.  Sourced directly from the French countryside, crisp and dry, this wine is best enjoyed young.  The aroma of Sauvignon is unmistakable with its green leafy notes, gooseberry fruit, mineral and melon.

Vintners Reserve Merlot - $5 off

Wonderful plum, spice, currant and wild berry flavors.  The soft tannins of this Bordeaux varietal carry these aromas and flavors to a long lingering finish.

This wine is medium bodied, nicely balanced, and fruit forward.  The flavor profile is a very pleasant blend of black cherry and mild black raspberry.  There is a hint of oak and a touch of black pepper to add to its character.  The finish is dry with moderate tannins that linger quite nicely. Very versatile.

Vintners Reserve Gewurztraminer- $5 off

A distinctive wine with grapefruit, rose petal and lychee nut characteristics with a hint of sweetness. With an aromatic bouquet of cinnamon like spiciness and zesty citrus flavours that lead to a mouth-filling finish. Includes Flavour-Pack.

• Barons Pale Ale - $4 off - try with our new White IPA

One of our most popular beers, Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic English pale ale.  It has a rich, chestnut color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character.  Goldings hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.  It is a flawless beer that opens with bright, perky high notes of maltiness and orange blossom and segues into a delectable hoppiness.

For IPA lovers we have the ingredients and recipe for our award winning India Pale Ale.  Try it with 1098 Wyeast British Ale yeast.  You can change your IPA into an Innis & Gunn style beer adding Brandy, Rum, Scotch or Disarrona at bottling time - ask for the recipe the next time you are in.  Use our IPA add on package and use a 19 L carboy to make a West Coast IPA.

IPA is light amber to copper in colour and was introduced in the late 18th century in response to the long ocean journey from England to India. To stabilize and help avoid spoilage more hops were used in the brewing process. This added to the beer's bitterness which worked to mask any stale flavour resulting from the long voyage. The antiseptic properties of alcohol assured Indian expats the safe arrival of their ale.
