There is something in the way the subtle flavours and balance of wine really come alive when paired with its food counterpart.  It's something we like to call the ‘wow factor’. Interested in discovering this for yourself? You’re in luck! We are hosting two wine & food pairing evenings November 18 and November 26 where you can experience what a difference the right dish can make. Special presenter from Winexpert is Rick Vanderberg. Here, not only will we be showcasing commercial examples of our upcoming special edition wines, but you will be trying them with perfectly paired food.

Paul has been hard at work consulting with the Home Vintner Chefs, and we are very excited to share this event with you. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot soon! Tickets are $10 per person, and the event starts at 7pm at the Highwood Community hall, 16 Harlow Ave NW.

Turn North from 40th Ave NW (half way between 4th Street and Northmount Drive) onto Hudson Rd NW. The hall is 4 blocks north on the NW corner of Harlow and Hudson.  Behind Colonel Irvine School.

Call (403) 284-0486, email us at or drop in to any of our stores to reserve your seat.

Thank you! Your continued support of The Home Vintner has helped us grow ever since we opened our first store in 1993.  In order to serve you even better, we invite our Calgary customers to visit us at our NW location at 14th St and John Laurie Blvd. (across from Nose Hill Park and the Calgary Winter Club)

For those of you who are unable to come to this store we will arrange to deliver any sales over $300 directly to your home or office (some restrictions will apply).

We look forward to offering you the same friendly service you have come to rely on.

Fall is here and for winemakers that means one thing: the inevitable return of our sworn enemy – the common fruit fly. Minute little flying monkeys of doom, they're hard to exclude from your winemaking areas, and while they're easy to kill, by the time you've swatted one, thirteen more have materialized out of thin air, looking for a free meal! The reason why we need to be concerned over the little monsters isn't just that they're unsightly and chewy when you discover one inside a mouthful of Chardonnay.

Tip for when peeling some of the newer art style paper labels from the wine bottles - if you just try and peel them they shred. They do come off okay with a bit of work, but they do shred.

• don't soak them or get them we

• put warm/hot water in the bottle for just a few minutes to soften the glue, then carefully peel - it should come off in one piece.

• Barons Brown - $4.00 OFF

Deep chestnut coloured ale with a full-bodied, roasted malt flavour. Precisely balanced with hop flavour, aroma, and maltiness to bring out this beer's true character! This brown ale is more full bodied and flavorful than lagers in general, thereby providing a nice autumn or winter drink as well as many food pairing possibilities. With its smooth mouth feel, lightly roasted sweet malt taste, and subtle nutty butteryness Baron's Brown Ale makes for a very pleasant drink.

Barons Brown is an ideal base for our add-on pack producing A Great Stout.  For a true taste of Ireland use our Irish Ale liquid yeast.

We are very excited to once again have the 909 IPA. This beer is a spin-off from the flagship 606 IPA produced by Paddock Wood. This version is shooting for hoppy and aromatic with citrus nodes from the Cascade hops. With expected IBU's of 40-45 - it definitely rings in as a true IPA style.
Please visit our stores to find out more about this great microbrewery beer kit, and for staff suggestions on the best liquid yeasts to pair.

The trend in craft beer is to enjoy higher IBU’s (International Bittering Units) than in the past. Make your Barons beer kit as usual, remove about 4 L of the wort and place into a stainless steel pot. Add your hops and simmer for one hour. Once cooled add the 4 L of malt to your primary. Stir in your bentonite and sprinkle your yeast on the surface.

The rule of thumb is:

     • Aroma Hops – simmer for less than 5 minutes or dry hop in your primary
     • Flavouring Hops- simmer for 15 – 30 minutes
     • Bittering Hops – simmer for 1 hour as above

Our pumpkin beer is mild, with no bitterness, with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Pumpkin Cerveza will add seasonal cheer to your beer collection. We use the Barons Mexican Cerveza which allows the pumpkin pie flavours to come through beautifully.

You will need 6-7 lbs of fresh pumpkin which is appearing in the food stores. Recipe is available in your local store.

The Home Vintner is the only store in Western Canada with Barons beer add-on packs. We have over 30 add-on packages available along with a growing number of recipes; constantly we are researching to add to both.

With the incredible choice in craft beer we need your help. This fall we are offering our beer makers a free Baron beer kit for a successful add-on and/or beer recipe. Experiment and bring in a bottle for tasting.

An eclipse is one of nature’s most spectacular events: a rare occurrence well worth the wait. The essence of this phenomena is captured in Winexpert’s Eclipse wines, showcasing popular varietals from some of the world’s greatest vineyards and wine regions. Delivering depth of character, aroma and complexity, Eclipse perfects the delicate balance of tannin, luscious fruit and acidity using pure varietal grape juice and premium grape juice concentrates. Like an eclipse when perfectly aligned, the elements of Winexpert’s Eclipse combine to produce powerful, full bodied wine of intense structure, inspiring flavour and stature.

Available for a limited time is the Forza - Deep ruby colour with aromas of plum, smoke and spice. Rich flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and cedar with lingering oak and a firm, long finish.

“Forza” (meaning strength in Italian) and is an “Amarone Style” kit featuring Corvina, Sangiovese, and Barbera juice along with grape skins for added depth. This is a rare treat for the wine makers who like a big bold red wine. We expect this kit to be our top seller in Eclipse during it's limited release.

Super light reds sometime get a poor reputation with serious wine drinkers, partly from a misconception that a good red wine needs to have a rich body and deep concentration. But that is not always true – depending on what you are looking for. Super light reds can give lots of red berry fruit intermixed with other herbaceous and/or spicy notes with a feather weight body and refreshing finish.

The first cardinal rule is to not serve super light reds at room temperature! Light reds can seem thin and lifeless when served too warm. It is important to serve these wines around 12° to 16°C to help show their pretty aromatics. This can be achieved by simply popping the bottle in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes.

We offer a full range of Pinot Noirs:

• Eclipse Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir - $5 Off
• Selection New Zealand Pinot Noir - $5 Off
• Selection Pinot Noir - $5 Off
• World Vineyard California Pinot Noir - $5 Off
• Vintners Reserve - $5 Off

For our Island Mist lovers we are offering two Limited Edition Christmas kits.

Naughty Mist: Fruit forward Merlot with a “naughty” side. Aromas of spiced orange and brown sugar with notes of cinnamon and ginger for a lingering finish with a kick.

Nice Mist: Crisp Pinot Grigio with notes of fresh green apple, festive white cranberries and a round finish. This wine definitely makes the nice list.

Recently in the news there was a report of leaking and exploding growlers purchased at a local microbrewery. We have been receiving worried phone calls about this. Rest assured these faulty growlers are NOT from our supplier. This is probably another incident of cheap knock-offs making their way into our industry.

We also see low quality knock offs in the industry from wine and beer kits to hardware. The Home Vintner prides itself on researching and only selling top quality products.
