The Home Vintner - The Home Vintner Monthly Newsletter - August 2010

August 2010

As you look through this newsletter you will notice many new wine products which will be available in limited quantities: new Beaujolais, World Vineyard Limited Release, Peach Ice Wine, Blackberry Port and Chocolate Raspberry Port.  All available in September, these will be on a first come first served basis.  To guarantee that you will receive the kits that you want you may pre-order by August 4th.  When the shipments arrive in September we will phone you and let you know.  To place an order you may phone or visit your closest store or email us.

Pre-order by August 4 - $133.95.  Like many wine regions of the world, Beaujolais in France has always made a young wine to celebrate the end of harvest season. Fresh and juicy, these wines are a bold purple-pink color, bursting with an amazing array of fruit aromas, while their low tannin levels make them extremely - sometimes perilously – drinkable when young.

The grape that makes such a delicious wine possible is the Gamay Noir.  By careful selection (in Beaujolais all grapes are hand-picked), whole berry fermentation and with other techniques the grapes are turned into a red wine that drinks like a white; lightly chilled it has hints of banana, pear, candy and some even say bubble gum! more

Beer purists are thrilled with our Barons beer kits which adhere to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 - beer must only be made with barley, hops, water and yeast.  Pure and simple!  After you compare this to what is added to commercial beer you'll understand why our microbrewery style beer kits are so popular: more- Chemical Additives used in Commercial Beer

Grapes are a very long-term crop (no fruit for four years, and then a 20+ producing life for vines) growers who don't promote soil health are rapidly without a livelihood.  No soil = no vines.

There isn't a huge call for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on grapes. The only really common thing that grapes get sprayed with is Bordeaux mixture, a blend of lime and sulphate that prevents mould.  This compound is allowed for use on organic grapes, as it's not derived from petrochemical products, and is pretty benign. more

Did you know that the life of your beer's head will depend on the oil on your skin?  Watch out for lipstick and Chapstick; never wear it if you plan to do any beer drinking, as the head on your beer will be reduced to an oily swamp!

Glasses are important -- whatever glass you decide to use for beer, that's it: beer only.  You will need to cure your glass, and here is the method to use:  Give it a good scrubbing with salt and hot water - a little water, 1/2 teaspoon of salt.  Rinse well in hot water, and let it cool.  After every use, rinse well in hot water, nothing else.  No soap! Periodically give the glass the salt cure to keep it fresh.

Now you have a well-cured glass - what next?  Right.  Pour yourself a glass of beer!  Cheers!
