Socrates, Shakespeare, Napoleon, Catherine the Great, Queen Isabella, and Casanova all were great lovers of chocolate, for the Aztecs, chocolate was a gift from the gods.  Throughout history, chocolate has been consumed as a medicine, aphrodisiac, status symbol, and to be closer to the deities.

Chocolate has over 400 distinctive flavour compounds, and a long list of natural chemicals that release endorphins. It can also affect brain chemistry to produce similar feelings experienced when a person falls in love. The rumoured health benefits of chocolate are numerous, from lowering cholesterol, improving digestion and boosting cognitive abilities.

You can experience the "WOW factor" when you pair any of our chocolate ports with your desserts, or simply by choosing the right bon bon to surge your taste buds.

The Home Vintner has committed to as many of these wines as we can get our hands on! Every few years a wine will come through our Limited Edition series that is a "must have" in your wine cellar. This is one of those wines.  We only have a limited number available, so please let us know as soon as possible.

From Vine to Cork, Rocky Mountain House - our Wine & Beer Making class for May is on Saturday May 30th at 1 p.m. Please call or drop in to register for free. Not familiar with Yuzu? Yuzu [pronounced YOO-zoo] is a Japanese citrus fruit which is about the size of a tangerine. It's being hailed as the next super fruit and is being used to flavour everything from beer to chewing gum. It tastes like a cross between a lemon, mandarin and grapefruit and its sourness and acidity plays well against the coconut notes and sweetness of Island Mist.

Cool down and enjoy this adult twist on a hot summer day, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. This month's sale wine, World Vineyard Washington Riesling, is an ideal choice to make this summer treat. You need the right amount of fruit forwardness in the wine in order to balance out the cold temperature.

WHY LIQUID YEAST?

Seventy percent of the extra flavours in your beer come from the yeast. You will notice a distinct difference  by using an Irish Ale yeast with our Stout recipe  or the Kolsch yeast with our Dutch Lager. Our Belgian Wit recipe just would not be the same without a true Belgian Wit yeast.

That is why The Home Vintner carries a wide selection of liquid yeast to choose from to achieve the most from your craft beers. Now available just in time for spring.

BEER FLOAT

This recipe is pretty basic...Beer + Ice Cream (Blender is optional) = Beer Float.

 

  

PRIMING YOUR BEER USING DRY MALT/HONEY/MAPLE SYRUP

Priming with dry malt takes longer to carbonate, but will produce a more creamy, dense head. Honey will give beer its distinct flavour. Molasses lends itself to our Porter and Stout recipes. Try priming with brown sugar.  What could be more Canadian than priming your beer with Maple Syrup?

A personal favourite, and recommendation for those who want a great summer beer is the Mexican Cerveza - nothing quenches better than this – light and easygoing. Fresh, bright, light bodied, clean flavour - great on the patio and beach. Comparable to a Pacifico.

How about a lime, raspberry, blueberry or mango Cerveza?  Recipes are in our stores now.

You can create a wonderful Belgian Wit using Mexican Cerveza as the background.  A light, refreshing beer with a clean crisp profile. As with most wheat beers, the relatively high protein content leads to haze, giving the beer a light golden colour. With light body, slight sweetness and a zesty orange-fruity finish. Coriander, orange peel and our special Wyeast Belgian Wit yeast produces the complexity and depth of fruity flavours contained within the glass.

For Belgian Wit use 3944 Wyeast Belgian Witbier yeast, and our add on pack of cracked wheat, coriander and orange peel.
