The Home Vintner - The Home Vintner Monthly Newsletter - December 2014

DEADLINE TO PRE-ORDER OR PRE-PAY IS DECEMBER 5

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Winexpert Limited Edition releases. The biggest and best one of a kind wine-kit program in the industry, and an enormous triumph.

In honour of this occasion, four spectacular wines are making their return. These are the wines consumers have raved about, and begged to be brought back.

We have also developed a special 25th Anniversary Yakima Bordeaux style blend, aptly named Triumph. This blockbuster wine was created to celebrate the achievement which defines this limited edition program.

LAST CHANCE FOR LE14 WINE & FOOD PAIRING

Phone (403) 284-0486, email us at info@thehomevintner.com  or drop in to any of our stores to reserve your seat. There is something in the way the subtle flavours and balance of wine really come alive when paired with its food counterpart.  It's something we like to call the ‘wow factor’. Interested in discovering this for yourself?  You’re in luck! We are hosting a series of wine & food pairing evenings November 27 and December 4 where you can experience what a difference the right dish can make. Here, not only will we be showcasing commercial examples of our upcoming special edition wines, but you will be trying them with perfectly paired food.

Wine and food have gone hand in hand since around 6000 BC when people first started fermenting grapes. It’s interesting to look at cultures with a long history of grape growing and to see how their cuisine and wine mesh together perfectly, as if both food and wine were specifically designed with the other in mind.

Take Bordeaux in France for example, Bordeaux is often described as a ‘food wine’ but what does this mean? Having a glass of Bordeaux on its own, while certainly enjoyable, isn’t nearly as mind blowing as pairing with with duck or lamb traditionally grown in Bordeaux, or with a rich creamy mushroom truffle sauce which the region is also known for.

Paul has been hard at work consulting with the Home Vintner Chefs, and we are very excited to share this event with you. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot soon! Tickets are $10 per person, and the event starts at 7pm at the Highwood Community hall, 16 Harlow Ave NW.

Turn North from 40th Ave NW (half way between 4th street and Northmount Drive) onto Hudson Rd NW.  The hall is 4 blocks north on the NW corner of Harlow and Hudson.  Behind Colonel Irvine School.

Thank you Calgary for voting The Home Vintner gold for best place as your favorite wine & beer making store.  Each year Calgarians vote for their favorite businesses through the Calgary Herald's competition.

OVER 100 YEARS OLD!

Did you know that one of the hardest workers at The Home Vintner is over one hundred years old?

That's right. Our grain mill we use to grind wheat, barley and rye is actually a coffee grinder invented in New York City, manufactured in about 1910. We don't know much else about it or how it eventually ended up in Calgary, other than that Derek at our NE store got it from his sister a few years back. Many thanks, Derek!

"The Old Man in the Corner" is a valuable asset to our beer section. When we first started selling add-on packets, we only sold whole grain. The instructions told you to crush it with a rolling pin, and "DO NOT USE A COFFEE GRINDER" . A modern coffee grinder would pulverise the grains into a powder, but our old guy does a tremendous job crushing the grain kernels just to the right consistency needed to make the perfect "tea" for adding to your beer.

Imagine that: here's something so old that still has the ability to contribute to a wonderful thing, like the best beer you can make!

WINE RECOMMENDATION – SELECTION LUNA ROSSA & BIANCA

SELECTION LUNA ROSSA - A Bold, robust and intense, our "Big Red" is one of our largest, most full-bodied red wines (5 out of 5)! A dark, inviting color and rich, bold oak-enhanced aromas suggest at what is to come: an abundance of mouth-filling, chewy berry flavors. Luna Rossa is complex, with rich layers of fruit and solid supporting tannins, capped by a long oak finish.

The formulation on this is completely proprietary. The Luna Rossa is a blend and is modeled after the Italian wine, Amarone de Recioto de Valpolicella. It’s made in the north-east of Italy, in the Veneto region. Ripasso-style, it utilizes partially raisined grapes of typical Italian varietals.

SELECTION LUNA BIANCA - Our biggest, boldest white wine ever (5 out of 5). In the spirit of the great full-bodied Chardonnays of California and Australia, Luna Bianca is lush, golden and rich. Luscious, buttery aromas dance up from the glass. Flavours of tropical fruits blend with the vanilla-oak backing. Don’t let the “Off-dry” label scare you, it's perfectly balanced and many commercial Chardonnays have the exact same sweetness level. A unique white not to be missed.

NEW- HEMP NUT BROWN ALE ADD ON PACK

A refreshing brown ale with a hemp nut twist. This beer starts with the aroma of hemp and brown sugar. Initial taste is a bitter bite at the back of the mouth with an exceptional creamy mouth feel. Flavour transitions into a nutty sweetness, followed by a smooth brown ale finish.

You will enjoy your own Hemp Nut Brown Ale using the Barons Brown ale (on sale in December) with our new add on pack.

CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY PORT AND CHOCOLATE PAIRING

Judging from the amount of 375 ml wine bottles that have been flying off The Home Vintner's shelves, customers are in the midst of bottling their Chocolate Raspberry Ports! Try pairing your CRPs with Lindt's 75% cocoa Ecuadorian chocolate and enjoy the "Wow" factor of this match. Take a sip of the Chocolate Raspberry Port, pull a little air over your teeth, chew the chocolate so that it coats your tongue, and then take another sip of your Chocolate Raspberry Port. Raspberries, raspberries, raspberries fill the palate!

DON'T PUT EGGNOG IN YOUR BEER MUGS

The Christmas holiday season always includes celebrating with family and friends. Some attention is needed towards how you are serving up your libations!

All beer mugs and champagne glasses should be washed with a mild detergent - no soap - and NOT in a dishwasher which uses a rinsing agent.  Any residue on the glasses or mugs will kill the head on the beer and the bubbles in your bubbly.  Lipstick and Chapstick on the rim of the glass can also have the same effect.

The same is true for Eggnog. The milk and egg can leave a protein residue, which is very hard to remove. With a  little effort that involves washing and drying by hand,  this will insure your guests will get the best from your hand crafted beer and bubbly.

MOVIE RECOMMENDATION - BOTTLE SHOCK - NOW AVAILABLE ON TELUS DEMAND & OTHERS

The story of the early days of California wine making featuring the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting of 1976 that has come to be known as "Judgment of Paris".  In 1976 the owner of a struggling Parisian wine shop decides to hold a taste contest between French and Californian wines.  Click here to see the trailer...
