NEW BEER KITS
Introducing Brewer's Best Beer making kits. Available in the US for over 20 years, Brewer's Best has a reputation for outstanding taste directly comparable to commercial craft beers. These are fully tested, BJCP (beer judge certification program) recipes. Requiring a 19 litre carboy, these full malt kits will be a welcome addition to your cellar.
Soon to arrive are: Belgian IPA, English Bitter, Gluten Free Ale & Kolsh with more to come.
We have brought these in to supplement our 13 Barons kits, 25 add ons and 46 different yeasts.
I've often wondered why so many people on the west coast love their super hoppy beer. I like my hops too, but some of their local brews were more than a little challenging for me.
Some research later, and it all makes perfect sense. Hops (Humulus) belong to the family Cannabaceae. Marijuana, weed, pot, bud, ganja...you know, the other herb those west coasters have a well-known fondness for are a close cousin of hops. Come by for a whiff if I happen to be bagging a bale of Cascades next time you're in the store. The nose knows!
More interesting facts about hops:
• Only female flowers are used in brewing
• Like its cousin, hops are rapid growing. At its most vigorous, it can grow 20-50 cm (8-20 inches) in one week
• Producers "weed out" any male plants to avoid pollination and thereby seeds, which can cause off flavours due to their fatty acid content
• The perennial bines (not vines) die back to the ground in autumn, flowering on new wood each year
• The first cultivated hops originated in China. Today there are about 80 varieties used in brewing world wide
• Hops are a beautiful plant, and they can be grown right here in Alberta! This picture was taken 29 September 2013 in Tuxedo Park neighbourhood, Calgary

NW STORE IMPROVEMENTS
Our recent addition of space efficient shelving has prompted clients to remark, "Hey, you don't have much stock in here!" The key word is "efficient", because we have more stock than ever but it is now all on display, and not "in the back room". Come and see! Great job Jack!
PAUL'S RANT - GOOD ADVICE STARTS HERE
At The Home Vintner, we pride ourselves on our in-depth wine and beer making knowledge. We continually upgrade our skills through courses and research. Home Vintner staff have won Winemaker of the Year and Beermaker of the Year awards. To date, The Home Vintner Wine Guild has accumulated 652 Provincial, National, and International Awards. Sixteen of our staff members are certified under International Winemaking Programs.
We like to re-educate those customers who have researched home brewing and wine making techniques on the internet. They talk with us, and they ask "why didn’t anyone tell me that before?” Unfortunately, the internet is not the most reliable source of information, so for years these vintners and brewers have not been achieving the best results from their wine and beer making hobby.
When you come into one of The Home Vintner stores, you may wonder why the staff ask you questions regarding what you're making and how it's turning out. This is because we have the knowledge, and, along with the best product on the market, we want to share it with you.
From Paul CEO of The Home Vintner
THE HOME VINTNER OKOTOKS “SATELLITE” STORE
Whitney Dunham is the face you will find behind the counter at Glacier Pure Water in Okotoks. Whitney's water store has been in business for 11 years, and The Home Vintner has been in partnership with her for 4 years now.
Whitney makes her own wine from our Winexpert kits, and enjoys sharing a glass with her friends and family. Her palate leans towards red wines, and she is enthusiastic about trying many of the different red varieties that Winexpert kits offer.
Whitney feels that having The Home Vintner wine and beer making kits and equipment in her water store is a natural fit. Most of her customers prefer to use her reverse osmosis water as part of the wine / beer making process.
As of today, she sells more wine kits than beer kits, but with the ever increasing interest in craft beer, especially amongst the younger crowd, she is thinking that beer will soon be a close second!
Glacier Pure Water is located at # 7, 700 Village Avenue, Okotoks

CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN BEER LABELS
You are making the best beer so why not dress up the bottles with our Home Vintner beer labels? They are excellent for the home brewer because they stick, stay and remove cleanly. Beer of this quality should be presented properly.
WHY LIQUID YEAST FOR MY WINE?
Our kits are great with the dry yeast provided but can excel in depth and complexity of taste and aroma when paired with the right liquid yeast.
By far our largest comparison opportunity to date was the LE2011 California Zinfandel Shiraz. We made that kit with the dry kit yeast provided, and also with the Chateau Red, Port Wine and Zinfandel liquid yeast. All variations were nice with this wine, with subtle differences in taste or nose. However in side by side tasting, the Zinfandel yeast brought this wine to a logical completion that outstripped the other choices. Chianti and Valpolicella shine with the Chianti yeast. Barolo displays more depth of character and fruit forward with Zinfandel yeast. Chilean Malbec and Malbec Shiraz pair exceptionally with Chateau Red yeast. Ask our staff for liquid yeast recommendations for your next wine kit.

SPECIAL OFFERS IN OCTOBER
BARONS - MEXICAN CERVEZA - $4 OFF
A personal favorite, and recommendation for those who want a great summer beer is the Mexican Cerveza - nothing quenches better than this – light and easygoing. Fresh, bright, light bodied, clean flavour - great on the patio and beach. Comparable to a Pacifico.
How about a lime, raspberry, blueberry or mango Cerveza? Recipes are in our stores now.
You can create a wonderful Belgian Wit using Mexican Cerveza as the background. A light, refreshing beer with a clean crisp profile. As with most wheat beers, the relatively high protein content leads to haze, giving the beer a light golden colour . With light body, slight sweetness and a zesty orange-fruity finish. Coriander, orange peel and our special Wyeast Belgian Wit yeast produces the complexity and depth of fruity flavours contained within the glass.
Use our liquid yeast and our add on pack of cracked wheat, coriander and orange peel.

Ronnie's Roasted Pumpkin Cerveza - Les calls this new beer, "Thanksgiving in a glass!" Our pumpkin beer is mild, with no bitterness, with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Pumpkin Cerveza will add seasonal cheer to your beer collection. The Barons Mexican Cerveza allows the pumpkin pie flavours to come through beautifully.
