VINEYARD ROSES

If any of you took a winery tour this summer,
did you notice any rose bushes planted at the end of each row of vines? Seems like every winery I've ever been to has lots of roses, and I've heard as many stories as to the purpose they serve.

The most common reason is that they alert vine keepers to the presence of the dreaded powdery mildew (odium). Roses will show signs of the disease before it spreads to the grape leaves, then to the fruit, which will cause the grapes to split and rot.

Some other explanations for this practice are even simpler:
• Roses attract beneficial, pest-eating insects
• It's tradition
• Roses sweeten the grapes

Or, downright amusing:

Legend has it that vineyards in Australia used retired mine horses to turn the soil between vines. After years of working in dim light, these horses were almost blind. To prevent them from making too sharp a turn at each end, a rose bush was planted as a prickly reminder to steer clear.

Whatever the reason, if any at all, roses certainly add an extra touch of romance and beauty to vineyards around the world.

PAUL'S RANT – THE “WANNABES” FALSE CLAIMS

We, at The Home Vintner, tend to ignore false claims in our market. Certainly every industry has that problem, e.g., the $ 20 Rolex watch (“Really ?? it's as good as the real thing”).

In the wine and beer kit industry, it's other brands that make comparisons.  They claim that their brand is comparable to Winexpert's!  This is ABSOLUTELY false!  I'm privileged to be on an Advisory Counsel that meets with the executives that control some of these brands.  Our Winexpert brand in The Home Vintner stores is the premium quality on the market, and is crafted to be distinctively the best.

Our concern is that if a lie is repeated often enough, there is a segment of the population that will begin to believe it's true. Remember – NOTHING COMPARES TO WINEXPERT!!

THE HOME VINTNER COCHRANE “SATELLITE” STORE

The Home Vintner in Cochrane is located at Pro H20 bottled water store, address is 252 River Avenue. We started sharing space in this “satellite” store in 2003. Originally, we thought of calling them “sputniks”, however we quickly realized that the younger generation would not have a clue what a sputnik is! So, the name satellite evolved.

These days, customers who venture into the Cochrane store will find Pam behind the counter.  Pam has worked at the Cochrane store for a year now, bringing with her an enthusiasm about learning the wine and beer making side of the business.

Pam makes both wine and beer.  Her favourite wines so far are the Island Mist Blueberry Pinot Noir and the Spéciale Chocolate Raspberry Port.   She admits she makes most of her wine and beer for her family and friends – she is not a beer drinker herself, but gets great feedback on it from the lucky recipients!   The current fan favourite so far is the Barons Blueberry Cerveza.  Favourites vary, depending on which family member or friend you ask, but the kits she has been asked to make over and over again are the Island Mists Blueberry Pinot Noir & Black Raspberry Merlot, as well as the ever popular Spéciale Chocolate Raspberry Port and Chocolate  Orange Port.

WELCOME TO OUR WINE GUILD

Learn why we have won over 640 Provincial, National and International awards.  Join our Wine Guild.  It gives you the chance to try other wine and beer that our members have made, discuss them, and learn how they are judged. Don't worry – we are not snobs, just a bunch of people who enjoy the same hobby. Think about putting your wine into next year's competition as well – Winexpert kits always do extremely well in competition. Call or email us if you are interested! All our meetings are listed on our Events Calendar on the webpage.

BEER TIP - A “HONEY OF A BEER”

You can use 3/4 cup of honey to prime your beer.  Use of local honey is reported to help reduce allergies to local pollen.  Expect 10 to 15 days to carbonate.

WINE AND BEER APHRODISIAC

A great pairing with your sparkling wines or your Stout is oysters, and yes, they are an aphrodisiac!

They contain dopamine which stimulates the brain arousal centre.....so be warned!

CELLAR TEMPERATURE BEER

Your dark beers should be served at cellar temperatures to allow their full character to come through.

FRUIT FLY SEASON

If you don't have a Home Vintner primary you are putting your wine or beer at risk because of the pesky fruit flies!  Not only do our primaries have an air tight seal, they are protected with a bung and airlock.  They also conform to the highest quality on the market with a number 5 code above food grade.

During primary fermentation the use of the wrong primary can leach bisphenol-A otherwise known as BPA which is widely recognized as a carcinogen (endocrine disruptor causing cancer).  Fruit flies with acetobacteria turns your hard work into vinegar.  Maybe it's time to up grade your primary at The Home Vintner.

Fruit fly recipe: in any cup add a little bit of apple cider winegar or red wine vinegar with a few drops of liquid dish soap.

ARE YOU LOOKING TO KICK UP YOUR WINE A NOTCH OR TWO?

Since I joined the staff at The Home Vintner, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of wine’s including ones from both Paul and Ron’s private stocks.  I’ve come to learn that the wine’s that stand out the most, the ones with smooth yet full body, the ones that are truly wonderful on the palate all have one thing in common - they were made with liquid Wyeast.

Recently I sampled a Selection International Brunello with grape skins which was made using Chianti Wyeast. It was truly exceptional after just 16 months!

Currently I have a Carmenere on the go, also using the Chianti Wyeast, and I salivate with anticipation. Another great pairing is an Eclipse Lodi Old Vines Zinfandel with grape skins using Zinfandel Wyeast .

Sounds intriguing – right?  Talk to any of our staff and we would be more than happy to provide direction in choosing the right Wyeast for your next spectacular batch.

SPECIAL OFFERS IN SEPTEMBER

BARONS - BROWN - $4 OFF

Our Barons Brown Ale, which is on sale this month, represents a uniquely English tradition.

This Brown Ale is made using a combination of pale and roasted malts that impart a toasty, nutty flavour.  Ask the staff about creating a Honey Brown or all the Add-on Packs for brewing different styles of beer.  For those looking for a complex beer experience, there is no better place to start than our Barons Brown Ale.

Cherry Porter Add-on Pack to Barons Brown Ale – Porters have a rich, dark colour , and taste of caramel, coffee and chocolate notes. Pair with a rich chocolate dessert – fantastic!

Stout Add-on Pack to Barons Brown Ale – Why is our Stout such an award winner? The magic lies in our malt to water ratio, which determines the higher specific gravity. Its bitter sweet and heavier nature pair extremely well with bitter chocolate, and its smoky tones with your BBQ beast.  Note – by bottling in glass bottles, our Stout will age for years, just getting better, as in a vintage wine.

SEPTEMBER IS MEZZA LUNA MONTH

The two wines used as targets while we were formulating our Mezza Lune White and Red were Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay and Kendall-Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon: very big, bold California wines that are high alcohol, very fruit-forward and heavily structured with oak.

VINTNERS RESERVE MEZZA LUNA RED - $5 OFF

Rich and flavourful, this purposeful blend marries intense aromas and complex flavours bursting of cherry and raspberry. The rich dark colour hints at the layered oak in the finish.  Delightfully complex, Mezza Luna is a powerful and lively red wine to serve with hearty meals.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium-Full | Oak Intensity: Medium

VINTNERS RESERVE MEZZA LUNA WHITE - $5 OFF

Mezza Luna (‘Half Moon') is Vintners Reserve's ‘great white' full, round and flavourful, with big fruit flavours and aromas. The oak provides a subtle yet noticeable balance to the fruit intensity.  Big, lush and golden, it’s excellent to sip on its own.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Medium

WORLD VINEYARD CALIFORNIA ZINFANDEL - SHIRAZ- $5 OFF

A deep flavourful red wine with notes of raspberry, black cherries, figs, dark chocolate and a jamminess that finishes with a peppery spice.

Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

WORLD VINEYARD GERMAN MULLER - THURGAU  - $5 Off

Müller-Thurgau (Moo-lehr Tirr-gow) Delicious flavours apricot, green apple and peach aromas of Riesling, and the early ripening qualities of Silvaner.  A great sipping wine, it's a perfect choice for potato chips (there's nothing like a crisp glass of Müller-Thurgau and some crunchy chips!) but mostly it's a very satisfying wine to quench a thirst in good company.

Sweetness: Off-Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None
