The Home Vintner - The Home Vintner Monthly Newsletter - May, 2010

May 2010

For a LIMITED TIME only, Winexpert is introducing two new Small Lot Series wines:

British Columbia Chardonnay – British Columbia is at the forefront of new, New-World Chardonnays, with a crisp, bright style that's perfectly balanced for food or casual sipping.  Pale yellow, with fresh mineral and citrus flavours, notes of pear, white peach, green apple and fine acidity lead to a long, creamy finish with notes of honey.  This wine can be left unoaked, or gently oaked to add notes of vanilla, smoke & butterscotch, along with a lengthened structure and sophisticated finish.

3 Continents Meritage - a red Meritage is a blend of two or more of the red “noble” Bordeaux varieties and no single grape variety can make up more than 90% of the blend.  Winexpert's 3 Continents Meritage combines Petit Verdot from Australia, Cabernet Sauvignon from California and Merlot from Chile to make a unique, globe-spanning vision of the quality a wine of the best varieties can truly possess.  Aromas of bright, black cherries and black current with soft tones of licorice, hints of cedar and herbs accented by a touch of mocha and vanilla complement rich flavours of chocolate dipped black fruit and notes of sweet oak.  Structured, ripe tannins are followed by a long finish.

A glass worthy of Estate Series

Eisch Vino Nobile Breathable Glassware Red Wine - Set of 6 GlassesAgain this year, if you purchase any Selection Estate series wine kit, you will receive a free Breathable Eisch wine glass!  These proved to be immensely popular last year, and even Paul admits “they work!”

A wine poured into a Breathable Glass for just 2 to 4 minutes will show signs of aeration equivalent to the same wine that has been decanted and aerated for 1 to 2 hours.  (While supplies last)  Retail value of each glass is $34.95.  For more info, go online at

Judges and stewards gathered in South Calgary last week to judge all the wine and beer sent in from Guilds around the province.  We expect to hear the results shortly, and anticipate that once again this year, The Home Vintner will excel in the ratings.  We are extremely proud of our “little Guild that Could” and all their achievements!  We are always looking for more members – we meet about once a month to discuss wine, try different wines, and organize various field trips and tours.  We are a fun bunch of wine and beer loving people who refuse to be “snobs”!

We had the opportunity to sample “another brand” of Brunello made from a kit.  The “claim to fame” is “we have the same quality brands of juices and concentrates as other stores”...................

Everyone, staff and customers alike, who tasted both Brunellos were all in total agreement that the Winexpert brand of Brunello was FAR superior to the “other brand”.

Some comments were: “This is just a cheap knockoff!”  “This one has a bitter aftertaste, ugh!”  “I get a chemical taste!  "Whereas, Winexpert's Limited Edition Italian Brunello received only accolades, the most notable being “I've died and gone to heaven!”  So, why wouldn't you buy the best?  Customers have been clamoring for more, so Paul has brought in extras, but once they're gone, they're gone!  This long awaited Italian Brunello is in a class all by itself.  Give us a call to reserve a kit or come on in to any of our stores!

The new Twisted Mists, Strawberry Margarita and Mint Mojito have become an instant hit.  The day they hit the stores, they were flying off the shelves!  Our customers can't wait to have these bottled in time for hot summer days.  These wine based cocktails are here for a limited time only, and Paul has managed to scoop some extras from Winexpert!  We still have clear PET bottles as well, for campers and hot tubbers who don't want glass around the campsite or the hot tub.  Buy TWO, get the t-shirt!  (While supplies last )

This time of year, as the days get warmer, basements get cooler.  Remember the optimum temperature for fermentation is 22 degrees C.  We carry heat belts to keep your wine and beer happily fermenting along.

We are pleased to introduce Therese, our new Public Relations Coordinator at The Home Vintner.  Therese is in charge of setting up fundraising events and/or classes for your group or organization.  Click here for more information on our seminars, if you have an idea or want more information, please call Therese @ 403-540-9339.

Paul demonstrates the making of a wine kit from the first steps right through to removing the CO2 and proper corking.  Years of experience shared so that the novice wine maker can be successful on their first attempt.  For those who have made wine for years there are new methodologies which will improve your end result.  Also, step by step Paul walks through the making of a beer kit with secrets shared so your first kit will be a success.

Vintners Reserve Merlot - Characteristically deep in colour with black cherry and berry aromas. The full fruit intensity of this wine has made it an increasingly popular varietal worldwide. Perfect with lamb, red meats and spicy tomato sauce dishes.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

Vintners Reserve Chardonnay - The perennial white wine favorite. A remarkably versatile wine, this classic now includes oak for a rounded vanilla-oak structure that is smooth and appealing. Dry, with pleasant acidity, Chardonnay's complexity is fully realized when aged.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

World Vineyard California Pinot Noir - World Vineyard California Pinot Noir creates a lasting impression on the palate with an intense ripe-grape and black cherry aroma, accented by a spicy suggestion of cinnamon and mint. Medium-full bodied and rich but not heavy, it's perfectly balanced with alcohol acid and tannin working harmoniously, and has substantial flavour despite its delicacy. It has an appealing soft, velvety texture, like liquid silk gently caressing the palate.
Sweetness: Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: Light

World Vineyard Washington Riesling - World Vineyard Washington Riesling has a distinctive floral and green apple aroma mixed with mineral elements from its Washington vineyard, giving it a brisk, 'racy' quality. Its high natural level of acidity enables it to balance a hint of residual sugar, setting off aromas of rose petal, apple, pear, peach and apricot and leading to a grand crisp finish of flinty mineral notes. Riesling is the longest-lived of all white wines.
Sweetness: Off-Dry | Body: Medium | Oak Intensity: None

While quantities last, you may purchase any 2 Baron's beer kits and purchase a dozen EZ-Cap bottles for 1/2 price!

This year with the introduction of our new website we have received great online interest in Grolsch style beer bottles.  Many beer chat rooms talk about a poor quality foreign import that didn't meet expectations.  Many beer enthusiasts have been searching for a supplier of a quality product here in Calgary.  The good news is that we have found an EZ-Cap 500 ml Grolsch style beer bottle that is made in Canada.

Our special order has just arrived - you may now purchase a dozen bottles for $29.00 at any of our locations.  For large orders please give us a phone call to ensure adequate supplies.

Barons Mexican Cerveza - Nothing quenches better than this – the quintessential summertime beer. Light and easygoing, with that special hint of flavour. All you need is this on ice with a plate of limes and you’re home free.

Barons Canadian Golden Ale - Beautiful pale coloured beer with slightly more hop flavour than typical Canadian beers. True to its style, C.G.A. is malty but well-balanced. An exceptional beer for the North American ale enthusiast.
